<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xUITGdOJF-0/TOwyxkNmR1I/AAAAAAAAASQ/XMKPy_l8rAs/s1600/100_2333.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; This is a trip we take each year to visit the students at the Campus Outreach Summer Project. Ten hours in the van....but it wasn't too bad this year. Our car DVD player has been a life saver for me!!!

It is always a delight to see what God is doing in the students hearts. Some are brand new Christian and others have been Christians for a while, but the hunger and excitement each of them have is so encouraging. Bowe, our area director at UNC, has done an amazing job running the project.

I tried to balance time with my kids and the students. The kids and I hung out during the day...usually at the pool and then I would try to spend some time with students in the evenings after the kids went to bed. We also got to see our sweet friends - Mike, Jennifer, Avery and Keller Boland (who we have known for 10 years now - for 7 months they lived with us and for 2 years they were our next door neighbors). Wow, we miss them, but what a refreshment to be around them again - for a short time.

Living in a hotel for almost two weeks has its challenges, but I must say....it is SUPER nice to have a maid clean our room most days. Too bad we didn't have a cook....

Something funny happened this year on the project: I was reminded several time by the students that I am no longer 25. I got ma'amed so many time I stopped correcting them....sigh! BUT I experienced a first. One of the students asked me if I was another student's mother!!! WHAT!!???!!! Okay...I get it...I get it...I'm getting older.

One afternoon while the students were at work, our family was able to slip away to a fun water park. It was a wonderful day of just being together.

Thanksgiving

I received a phone call from my Dad on Thanksgiving morning. It did seem a bit odd as I was still in my pjs. Usually Thanksgiving calls come after dinner. As best he could, he let me know that my Grandma died earlier that morning. It wasn't a shock as she was 94, but news like that is never easy to receive. I was in the front room of our home as I talked with my dad and when we got off the phone I sat down on her piano bench that is now in our home. At that moment, I became overwhelmed with thankfulness…. thankfulness for her. Tears flooded me as I sat amazed at my God who gave me such a gift. She was my gift from heaven. Things happen in this world that are so hard, and is so confusing – like death, disease. We just don’t understand. Yet if I am able to look close enough, in time I will see God’s hand loving me and providing for in the midst of that desperate time – maybe not at that moment…maybe not for years. That was what Grandma was for me.

As a little girl who lost her mommy, she stepped in the gap that was left and she loved me so well. It was 35 degrees this morning. This is by far one of my favorite seasons. The fall foliage is breath taking and the weather is perfect - highs in the mid 60s to 70s. I love North Carolina.

The time change is another welcomed change. I know most people don't enjoy the early nights, but I really like it. With the sun going down and the boys coming back inside from their play earlier, our evenings seem to run more smoothly. Dinner is on the table sooner and our evenings together seem longer - less distracted. Ahhh...another reason I love the fall.

Schooling has gone well so far this year. It definitely started with some bumps as I made changes to our curriculum - for me that is a big step. I don't like change, especially when I am comfortable. During the summer, I sensed the Lord prompting me to consider changing to Tapestry of Grace. I loved Sonlight, and the authors make it so easy for homeschooling moms. But the closer we got to starting the new school year, the more I leaned towards TOG. After much struggle (and fear), I dove in. TOG is a history based curriculum and although it took much getting use to, it has been great for our family. We are all learning the same things in history - from 1890 to the present. Right now we are deep in the Great Depression. I am amazed at how much I am learning as well as my children. I love learning history and I am learning just as much as they are (if not more!)

God has absolutely amazed me as I have watched Payton mature. He is really growing up - not just physically, but as a young man....in his attitude, in his character, in relationships with others. God has used our school and our family dynamics (being part of a big family, having siblings close in age, chores, our ministry with Campus Outreach, etc) in his life, but He has also used sports (believe it or not). Rupert and I looked long and hard for a tackle football league that would not overwhelm him in his first year. We found one that we felt very strongly about - except one BIG thing - it was in Wake Forest (40 miles away). After attending a few of the conditioning workshops and with lots of prayer, we decided the sacrifice it would take in getting him to the practices and games (3 times a week) would be worth what he would gain. What an amazing fall! Yes, he gained skills in the game of football, but more than that, what he gained in character was far worth the hour commute one way during rush hour to his practices. The coaches, who love the Lord and football, worked him hard and challenged him to the core. They demanded his best. At the beginning of the season, he wanted to quit - it was too hard. Rupert and I struggled with whether or not we should let him quit. Where was the line between loving him and hurting him? Should we make him finish what he committed to or is this too much for him? In the end, we made him push through. And in a few weeks time, he was a different player. He was loving it. Even the coaches noticed. I read a few months ago that in raising children, the number one priority for a parent is to develop character. Knowledge should always be second....because "no amount of knowledge can make up for deficiencies in character." As a homeschooling mom, I so easily forget this principle and get caught up with "what they are learning." I am so thankful that God loves our children deeper than we ever could and He is developing and teaching them more than we ever will. This is why I titled this blog "Always Present" because whether I see His hand or His work in our lives, He is there. I have good days and bad ones and during the bad ones, I sometimes look around and wonder where He is. But if the Bible is true, He IS there. And in times like this when I pull away, I can see Him so much clearer."

What is the best thing about staying in a hotel???

THE POOL!

On June 12th, we loaded up and headed to Orlando, Fl. to visit Campus Outreach Raleigh's summer project for 10 days. (The car ride itself is another story all in itself....whew). Although we go down each year to love and minister to our staff and students there, our kids think we go down to have FUN. As Rupert spends most of his time in meetings or speaking, the kids and I get to play. There is just nothing like having the pool right outside our door at our disposal whenever we want...and its free. It was really fun and the kids have not stopped talking about it.

If you don't know, the Summer Orlando Project is a 9 week summer camp we offer the area students we have been working all year. Some of them became Christians this past year, while others are still investigating. They work full time jobs at Disney World or Sea World and then in their off time we offer a variety of meetings to help them grow in their relationship with Christ. For example, we have bible study training, life management training, and discipleship groups to name a few. Of course we leave a bit of time for group dates and down time (but not much :) ). This year, there are 168 students from the Raleigh region as well as the Charleston region. Our staff are doing an amazing job of leading the project and shepherding the students. I love for our kids to be around such young, hungry, and energetic students. As a wife and mom who stays at home schooling our kids, it is easy for me to loose the vision of what Rupert does day in and day out. I am separated from the lives that are changing. I don't see first hand how God is drawing UNC, NC State and Duke students to himself. I'm not involved in the inner lives of these students like I once was. Of course this is my choice to be with my kids, being involved in their lives, but i am removed nonetheless. So each year when we go down to the project, I get to see all that God is doing and I am reminded why we do what we do and I wouldn't want to do anything else!

Spring Happenings

<img style="float:left; That is a very sobering thought for me. We have reached the half way mark. Wow...my little boy! Tears immediately come to my eyes as I think about the world that he will go out into. Will he be ready? Will we have trained him in such a way that he will be ready to enter into the life God has for him. Will we be ready to let him go? I know God is graciously leading all of us to that point in our children's lives. The moment they enter the world, we begin a process of getting them ready to leave. God loves Payton more than I ever could. He will lead him and protect him - that is what I will hold on to. God is trustworthy and I can release to Him the most valuable possessions I have - each member of my family.

For his birthday, Payton wanted to spend an afternoon with his friends so we piled into the van and headed to Monkey Joe's. God has been so good to give us buddies that we hang out with on a consistent basis.

For the past year and a half, Payton has mentioned on and off that he would like to experience getting a pie thrown in his face. It was one of those things that I would smile at not thinking he was serious. It would come up at different holidays. When his 8th birthday came around he mentioned it again. But again, I thought he was being silly. When this year's birthday edged closer and we began dreaming of things to do for his birthday, the pie in the face came up again. I couldn't believe it. This time we were going to make it happen:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v18.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Dc541c86a6a1383ea%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331642264%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D75F6D5617A0014E5BC6C56639DF1C0BFAE1D9288.4E04040CA0EA760E3F409D7C16B22D8E7A60ECC4%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Dc541c86a6a1383ea%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Du9bqIZpJVJBh2oa9Ydh1VpeNtoA&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312892081433193762" style="FLOAT: left; Two years ago when we told the kids we were moving from Charleston to North Carolina, they were so upset. The only reason they were ok about moving in the end was I told them it would snow. They had never seen snow so they were willing to move for that reason. Well, we got about 4 inches on this Tuesday. We had a great time seeing many friends and family. We were on the road for most of July and went all over the place. We had a great time and so enjoyed see friends from the past.

Congrats Spence!!

While we were in south Ga, we had a chance to visit Valdosta again which was a walk down memory lane for us. He spoke in several churches while we were gone updating people on the ministry here in the triangle.

We are back in Durham now. Boy it took me a LONG time to get settled back in, but we did it. We even began school August 6. Payton is beginning 3rd grade and with a huge grin, Jordan has begun Kindergarten. Here they are taking a break from school and playing "Chubby Bunny". Remember that game on a beach project or two.

On the Road

We left Durham last Saturday for an adventure to visit our beloved family, friends and supporters. Our first stop was Augusta, Ga where my parents live ("Gran and Pop"). Our kids just love being with them and were so gitty as we approached their house.

We were also able to spend time with Lisa's grandma who moved to Georgia last October from California. She is 93 and was in need of more assistance. I use to see her once every 2 years or so. I have been able to see her 4 times already since she has been here. What a blessing! She was so good to me as a child and she has such a special place in my heart. My parents have been so good to her.
Our next stop was Forsyth, Ga where my sister lives. Sadly, we are not able to see her family as my kids cames down with Hand, Foot, Mouth disease (a virus we picked up at VBS). Beth has a new baby and didn't feel it was wise to expose her....so we are looking forward to next time.

Sunday, July 6th, we will be visiting with Dayspring, the PCA church here in Forsyth who play a huge part in reaching NC college students for Christ. They believe in us as a couple and what we do as a ministry, which gives us enormous encouragement. We can't wait to see them.

Also in Forsyth is one of our favorite people - Movene Futch. She has been a friend and mentor to me since college and I so value her friendship. We have been staying with her these past few days.

Our next stop will be Valdosta, GA - wow. We have been so blessed to have some children living right on our street. Payton has a 7 year old friend named Carson he plays with almost daily. A few weeks ago we met a family who has 3 boys as well. One who is 7 and twins 5 year olds. Below is a picture of Jordan with his new friends.

This week our family was busy with Vacation Bible School. We learned about God through the life of David - as a young shepherd who had a heart like God's, on the run from King Saul striving to be obediant to God above all else, as a King, and even as a sinner who quickly repented of his sin when confronted with it. Throughout the week, our kids were found humming and singing the praise songs we had been sing each morning at VBS. Payton's favorite part was the crafts he made each day. Blake loved the puppet shows and seeing the animals (lamb and goat) they brought it to demonstrate the care it takes for a shepherd to provide for and protect his sheep. Jordan's favorite part was all of his friends he got to meet. The first day he said he had 3 new friends and each day he came home and told me he had even more friends. I think by Friday we were up to 7.

Summer has begun

We had such a great time playing soccer. All three boys had great times, yet learned a lot. It is somewhat nice to have our Saturdays back. Sometimes we were at the soccer fields most of the day. I was especially thankful for the mild weather. Jordan is enjoying his end of the season treat below.

We are not quite sure where those mild days went (as I am sure you feel the same way). It is 97 degrees now at 6:15 pm. Our boys are getting a bit restless while being stuck in the house. We definitely miss the access to the pool we had in our last neighborhood. One day last week, Blake was searching for something to do. If I had only heard the silence in the house...... You can see what he decided to do to entertain himself:

I tried not to laugh....but. Look how proud he was of it. I just decided this was our usherance into the summer hair cut. It would be cooler anyway.
Ahhhh, I am sure they are cooler...and you can see their eyes a bit better...don't you think?

Rupert is enjoying a bit of a break as the students here have gone away for the summer. He gets to enjoy the kids a bit more than usual. I have been so intrigued by how the events of history are all coming together. I am beginning to understand how the stories of the Bible fit into the history of our world. Over the last several weeks, Payton and I have been studying the Roman Empire. From the buildings like The Pantheon to the chariot races at Circus Maximus, the Roman world has come alive. One afternoon, I heard laughter coming from the other room when I realized Payton, Jordan and Blake were having their own chariot races. It is so exciting to see their learning lived out during play time.

Jordan's Game

Today was Jordan's turn at soccer. As Payton and I finished up our week of homeschooling, Blake came in to find a puzzle. While cleaning out our bookshelf earlier this morning, I found our alphabet train puzzle. I gave it to Blake, wondering if he could do it on his own. I made a point of not being in the same room with him, so he would not ask me which letter came next. To my delight, he was doing it on his own....and he slowly figured out the entire puzzle completely on his own!!! I was in the school room when I heard the door slam and then came the ear piercing screams. I ran to see what happened and found Blake on the floor. Holding his finger, I learned that he slammed his finger in the door. I didn't think it was going to be that bad and tried to settle him, but when I looked at it.....sighhh. It was bad. I was so thankful Rupert was home. I won't go into the detail, but we decided we needed to take him to Duke Urgent Care that was less than a mile from our house. They took him right in.
